Millsboro Art League 2008 Photo Contest
The May 19, 2008 award ceremony and reception for the 3nd Annual Photography Contest sponsored by the Millsboro Art League showcased some wonderful art and presented a variety of newcomers to MAL and the public. Fifty-nine works of art were hung from 29 artists.
Local watercolor artist, Dale Sheldon of Rehoboth, entered the contest with a photograph she calls “2 Taborstrasse”, which won the 1st Place all-around Grand Prize. The photograph Ms. Sheldon said, “was taken as I passed a building under construction in Vienna, Austria. Initially I passed the building by, but something about the image was compelling so I turned around and took the photo of the four men in red jumpsuits juxtaposed against the yellow building.” Judge, Elizabeth Bard of Newark’s EB Images, felt the same way. She couldn’t take her eyes off the photograph, returning to it several times before awarding it the grand prize.

Fifteen-year old Jade Timmons was delighted to not only win a ribbon but to win one of the grand prizes in the first photography contest she had entered. Her closely cropped photograph of a nesting flamingo with side light illuminating the pink hues of his feathers was and unusual take on a bird often photographed standing or in crowds. Initially she had listed her photographs, as not for sale, but before leaving the Saturday, May 17th Award Ceremony, she listed sale prices for both of her photos and said she was going to pursue her art photography more seriously.
Guests crowded the MAL gallery expressing delight at the variety of photographs in the show and the depth of talent exhibited.
Along with their registration fee, all entering artists earned a year’s membership in the Millsboro Art League where they can display and sell their work, participate in workshops and enjoy the artistic atmosphere of the League.
