Catherine Walls & Cas Chodnicki
Milford resident, CatherineWalls lives in the Delaware countryside with her husband and children. She finds nature to be very inspirational. Born in New Hampshire and raised in the Boston area and Long Island's north shore (with a brief diversion to North Carolina), her fine arts training started in early childhood with trips to the art museum and drawing sessions with her grandfather, a shoe designer.
Her formal training is limited to a few art classes at Washington College on Maryland’s Eastern Shore and SUNY StonyBrook in New York. She received a degree in Sociology and took a 10-year detour into the world of counseling in the areas of substance abuse and adult corrections, always painting on the side. After a 10-year career as a Probation/Parole Officer for the State of Delaware, she retired and began painting full time.
Catherine has exhibited at The Bigg’s Museum of American Art, in Dover, Delaware and her work hangs in private homes, corporate offices, community buildings and the local hospital. She is a founding member of the Mispillion Art League of Greater Milford and recently joined the Millsboro and Rehoboth Art Leagues, exhibiting with all three organizations. Her artwork has earned ribbons at the annual Tyringham Art Show in the Berkshire mountain area of Massachusetts. “My experience in art helped when I served for over 11 years as a coach for a creativity competition for children called Odyssey of the Mind,” states Catherine.

She enjoys all medium and trying new things but has primarily paints in watercolors and pastels. While her favorite artists are impressionists, her style is representational or realistic. Architectural details, street scenes and floral studies are favorites but anything colorful is likely to be in the piles of “to do” ideas.
Catherine has been chosen by the Millsboro Art League as one of two member artists whose work will be on display during the month of September at the League’s gallery located at 303 Main Street, Millsboro. Catherine's work can also be viewed at her personal digital gallery at: http://mywebpages.comcast.net/cm.walls

"Local Crowd"
After spending 36 years in computer engineering at IBM, Cas Chodnicki and his wife Cecelia retired to Ocean Way Estates in Ocean View, Delaware from Grasonville, Maryland in 1991.
He started painting in retirement, never having picked up a brush other than to paint the walls of his home, after several friends saw his colored pencil drawings. He had always doodled but never did anything with his art. Cas’s first lessons were at Del Tech with instructor Phyllis Manno whom he credits with being a great teacher for beginners. She introduced him to watercolors and he’s been practicing ever since. His landscape paintings result from photographs he takes of old ships, beaches, water scenes and old houses on excursions to places like Deal Island and Crisfield. Then he comes home, sets his photographs up and starts painting. His children usually claim his best works or if there’s a show he sometimes sells his work but mainly he paints for his own pleasure.
Cas always had an interest in art, taking his children and now his grandchildren to museums and art galleries. “Art is such a wonderful part of life,” says Cas, “something worth sharing.”
“I’ve gone to three, week-long Elderhostel painting programs too, one given by Robert Barnes in Ocean City, MD,” Cas relates “and they were wonderful, intense experiences that really helped me develop several new techniques.”
Cas has two grandchildren who have shown unusual artistic ability, “But, I’m not sure their talent comes from me because one has a mother whose is a professional artist and the other has a father who is an architect,” says Cas.
Cas Chodnicki is a member of the Millsboro Art League where his work can be viewed as one of two Featured Artists of the Month for September 2008. The Millsboro Art League is located at 203 main Street, Millsboro, DE. The gallery is open on Fridays and Saturdays from 11am to 3pm and on Sundays from noon to 3pm.
