The Millsboro Art League is pleased to welcome Artist Cathy Walls who will be teaching Beginning Pastels.
Beginning Pastels, Saturday, Aug 4, (9:30 am - 3 pm) & Sunday Aug 5, (9:30 am - 1 pm)

This is a good class for those who would like to try their hand at soft pastels for the first time. No artistic experience is necessary but those with experience in other medium would enjoy this class. The first day we will cover the history of pastels, information about supplies, including pastel and paper options and other necessary materials. You will learn a variety of strokes and methods to help you get the best results and then work together on a painting. The second day will be devoted to work on a painting of your own with assistance.
Day one, 9:30 am- 3:00 pm: The workshop will cover the information outlined below then, following the preferred approach, students will complete a painting of a still life set up by the instructor.
Day two, 9:30 am- 1:00 pm: This day will be devoted to exploring pastel painting as students work on a painting using their own color photos, materials brought from home or using still life items brought in by the instructor. More details below...

About the instructor:
Artist C. Mercedes Walls (aka: Cathy) lives in Milford De. Her preferred medium are watercolors and pastels although she also paints with oils, acrylics, pen&ink. Most often she paints in a realistic, representational style with flowers, architectural details, machinery and people in scenes of everyday life as favorite subject matter. Cathy has exhibited at the Biggs Museum of American Art, as well as with Mispillion, Millsboro,and Rehoboth Art leagues and the Delaware Watercolor Society, winning ribbons at all of these venues.
She received her BA in Sociology from SUNY Stony Brook, NY. Formal training is limited to a few classes in college, learning mostly from her grandfather (a shoe designer) and practice, practice, practice. Her work hangs in private homes and businesses and can also be found at Angelucci Gallery on Park Ave. in Milford.

Materials list:
1. One set of soft pastels [note: NOT hard pastels or oil pastels.] No fewer than 24 chalks in the set, an inexpensive set will be just fine for this class. Be sure and get a set that includes primary and secondary colors. Some sets are packaged as “landscape” or “portrait” sets that only include colors usually used to execute landscapes or portraits, do not purchase such a set. [AC Moore has a 24 pastel pkg. for under $10, Michaels carries sets at reasonable prices. Online you can go to Dick Blick www.dickblick.com or Artist Supply Warehouse (example: Mungyo set of 24 for $7.47) http://www.aswexpress.com .]
2. Pad of 24 sheet “pastel“paper or “Mi-Teintes” paper at least 11”x14”. [ online, Dick Blick and ASW carry Canson and Strathmore pads for $7.00 to $9.00]
3. One can of inexpensive hairspray (or “workable fixative”, either will be fine)
4. Kneaded eraser(s)
5. Cotton swabs
6. Small box of baby wipes
7. Smock or painting shirt
Still life arrangements will be provided for you to work from, but you may bring photos to paint from. It is better to work from a size larger than 4”x 6”, or 5”x 7”. If you can, please enlarge your photo and print it out on regular printer paper, no need to use expensive photo paper.
