Best in Show went to Richard Mathews for his portrait of a very old man called simply, “93”, a small, side profile of a gentleman in an “acidic range of green, gold and black oils applied with quick strokes of a pallet knife yet with a precisely drawn outline” Mills described the painting. Unfortunately, Richard was not able to attend the reception because he was serving as a receptionist at Gallery 1 in Millville to relieve a sick friend of the task.
Anne Hanna, of Dagsboro, took first place in the Two Dimensional category with her watercolor rendering “Love Doves,” which Lee Mills said he “marveled at what she had been able to do with such a limited range of colors. She controlled the lights and darks to create a work that was both realistic and abstract.”
“Dahlia” by Bob Connelly, of Milford, won the first place in Photography where “he took a gamble compositionally but won,” stated judge Lee Mills. “Usually photographs draw you into the photo but this composition makes you think about the margins and what’s out there beyond these three beautiful flowers.”
The Three Dimensional winner was a multi-layered photograph “Hats Trimmed Free of Charge” a whimsical title for the work drawn from a sign in the window of the building depicted. Various sections of the black and white photograph were cut and glued to black foam core with some facets of the photo extending outside the cut of the mat, creating depth and interest in the work by Mary DuBois of Milton.
After Millsboro Art League president, Ron Lightcap and Lee Mills distributed the awards they introduced the youngest entrant, Isaac Van Curen, a 13 year old Millsboro Middle School student, whose painting “Chillin’”, an acrylic rendered in the style of Grandma Moses was a big hit.

2008 Fall Art Contest
The Millsboro Art League held a reception on Sunday, October 4, 2008 for the opening of its Fall Art Show and to announce the winners of the three categories in the contest.
The 64 entries into the Photography, Two-Dimensional and Three Dimensional categories created “a wonderfully diverse display of art,” said contest judge Lee Mills of Coastal Art & Frame (click to visit) in Rehoboth. After announcing the winners and distributing awards, Lee described what he particularly liked about each of the winning works.
